Expect More Tehama is foremost an organization that believes in the power of community engagement and convening.
We believe the community can make a difference. We believe the community can solve problems. That belief starts with knowing each other and trusting each other. Expect More Tehama carefully designs and convenes opportunities for meaningful engagement to happen – from brokering introductions between two contacts to full scale events.
The Expect More Tehama Annual Summit takes place each November at Rolling Hills Casino. This special convening of community stakeholders is a forum to share ideas, celebrate great people and programs, inspire action and remind us that together we can do amazing things. The Summit strives to present the best, up-to-date information related to critical topics in education, the economy and workforce, and community wellness. It marries data and stories to paint a picture of our challenges and victories.
Another great example of community convening is Expect More Tehama’s commitment to summer.
Summer offers an opportunity to engage students and families in free and low cost activities that keep young minds engaged and learning — not “sliding” or losing what was gained during the school year. Expect More produces a Summer Activity Guide that includes activities of all kinds. Team members also work to help fill gaps of activities.
The goal is to have a variety of options for kids of all ages in sports, arts, science, reading, technology and more.
Expect More Tehama designed strategies to eliminate “summer slide” where students experience the loss of academic skills over the summer months, affecting socially disadvantaged students the most.
Expect More Tehama first convenes as many partners in education, business and community to map the summer, looking for gaps and collaborating to create new programs to fill them.
Once mapped, the team develops a summer curriculum and master community schedule of free or low-cost summer art classes, church camps, sports camps, youth theater opportunities and just about everything else that supports summer learning.
Finally, we promote the Summer Activity Guide through a literacy focused countywide campaign sponsored by local businesses, small grants and a ton of community volunteers.
