“True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” –Arthur Ashe
In the Fall of 2009, a small group gathered at Starbucks to talk about where available resources could be used to support education in Tehama County. The conversation quickly shifted to a series of questions. Why weren’t more of our high school graduates going on to higher education? What were they doing? How many wanted to attend college but couldn’t? The group needed more information, so they began talking to community stakeholders. A theme surfaced: those who went on to higher education were “expected” to go and those who did not were “not expected” to go. For many, it wasn’t even an option. Two things were clear: 1) there was a lack of expectation, or hope, that many would attend more than high school and, 2) everyone was passionate about the topic. Expect More Tehama was born.
Wanting more for our students is complex. It is not just about grades or classes – it is also about poverty, access, caring adults, safety, local capacity, community wellness and more.
Expect More Tehama realized the incredible weight of responsibility placed on education to fill multiple roles. They formed to find ways for community to come alongside and raise expectations through convenings, access to information, awareness of strong existing programs and new connections.
Expect More Tehama, the founding county network in North State Together’s regional collaborative, is excited for the next chapter of our Collective Impact work. Through regional collaboration, and in partnership with many, our region was awarded over $18 million dollars to continue and enhance our work. Read Press Release HERE.
